New Generations Service
Youth Service is considered as the fifth avenue of service especially in India. As per Rotary International, Youth service forms part of the avenue of Community Service.
As the name suggests, the avenue of youth service works with and for the youth through various committees and aims to develop leadership skills, social awareness and responsibility amongst them. It promotes excellence in education and sports by recognizing young achievers. It also organizes sports and other extra curricular activities to help in overall development of the youth.
The important committees presently active in our club are:
Rotaract Club
RotaFest 2010
Rotaract Club is a club similar to Rotary for the youth and is sponsored by a Rotary Club. The age group for the Rotaract is 19 to 29 years.
Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar has a community based Rotaract club called the Rotaract Club of Bangalore Indiranagar. This club functions like the Rotary Club and has its President and office bearers elected every year. The members are either students or young working professionals. It encourages leadership development amongst young people and encourages them to explore the idea of social service through the ideals of Rotary International. Many Rotaractors do join Rotary at later stages.
Interact Club:
Cauvery School Interact Club members at Karunashraya
The Interact Club works on similar lines as the Rotaract club but it is basically for school going children in the age group of 14 to 18. We have, in our club, sponsored both a community based and an institution based Interact Club. While over the last few years the community based club has almost become extinct due to lack of members the institution based clubs at Frank Anthony and Cauvery schools are going strong. The objective of Interact is to encourage youth to take leadership roles and take up social service independently or in conjunction with the Rotary Club.
Youth Development:
This committee looks after all the sports tournaments and other competitions aimed at youth development organized by the club. Some of the important events that take place are:
a. Hockey: The Dr.G.S.Randhawa memorial inter school hockey tournament for boys is generally organized during August/September. This tournament is organized along with Karnataka Hockey Association and is partly sponsored by the family of Rotarian Gurmeet S Randhawa. This tournament is organized in memory of Late Dr.G.S.Randhawa who captained the Indian hockey team in 1955-56. The first edition of the tournament took place in 1991 and since then has been held annually without a break.
b. Football: The inter-collegiate tournament is held in collaboration with the Karnataka Football Association. This has become a very popular tournament for the colleges. Held at the football stadium the tournament has become an important event in the associations annual calendar. This is also being held since last 15 years.
c. Swimming: This is an annual competition for non medalists held every year at the Basavangudi Swimming Pool. This competition is a much awaited event in the swimming competition calendar of Bangalore. It has over the years produced many champions who have gone on to represent the state.
d. Basketball: This is an annual competition held for inter school boys and girls. Being held for over a decade now, it provides an excellent opportunity for school children to compete in an interschool tournament.
In addition to the above the Rotary Club also recognizes and honours young people who excel in sports and academics.
RYLA: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is Rotary’s leadership training programme for young people. Young people in the age group of 14-30 are chosen for this training.
RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to
Demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth
Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
Encourage leadership of youth by youth
Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
Rotary Indiranagar first conducted a RYLA camp in 1990 and since then it has been a regular feature of the avenue of youth service.
The RYLA conducted by our club are either residential, where young people live in a common facility and undergo classroom training in various aspects of leadership or out bound where young people are taken out of Bangalore and learn leadership skills through out door activity and class room training.
Our Club also conducts a day long RYLA camp for children of our adopted schools. The emphasis is again on developing leadership skills and also impart career guidance. The course is tailor made for the semi rural schools.
RYLA is an imortant event in Rotary Indiranagar’s annual calendar and one of the most satisfying and successful programmes.
Rotary Indiranagar recognizes the need to work with youth as an important tool to develop excellent future citizens and Rotarians. This also goes a long way in fulfilling the mandate of Rotary International to work with younger generation in a bid to make this world a better place.
