Makhija Rotary Indiranagar Vocational Training Institute

– Rtn. Vidyut Shenoy
Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar, through MRIVTI, aims to empower semi-urban and rural youth with vocational skills and enable them to live a life of dignity.

Makhija Rotary Indiranagar Vocational Training Institute (MRVTI) resulted from K M Makhija’s dream. It was founded as a joint project of the K M Makhija foundation and Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar (RBI) in 2000 at Bhattarahalli on Old Madras Road on the outskirts of Bangalore. RBI’s strong link to the KM Makhija Foundation is Rtn R K Makhija, an esteemed member of our club, son of the late Mr. K M Makhija. MRIVTI’s aim is to empower semi-urban and rural youth with vocational skills and enable them to live a life of dignity.

It is directed by a trust represented by both the KM Makhija foundation and RBI. While the monthly trust meetings provide guidance, operational management is overseen by the KM Makhija foundation. The operational direction is set by the Institute Management Committee. RBI has contributed to MRIVTI significantly in the form of management leadership and grants for apparatus and equipment.

Since its inception, MRIVTI has touched the lives of over 2500 youth, through vocational training. The skills training offered is chosen based on the needs of society. The institute is recognized by Directorate General of Education & Training of the Government of India, under the Modular Employable Skills initiative. The training is imparted by qualified MRIVTI facilitators but assessed by impartial assessors of the MES scheme. The convenient location at Bhattarahalli enables easy access to instructors and students alike.

MRIVTI caters to people who are at least 15 years old and have minimal schooling and basic literacy in some language. If they have passed SSLC, they can be certified under the MES Scheme. A typical MRIVTI student hails from the economically deprived stratum of society, and is not comfortable with conventional schooling. By providing such youth with vocational skills, MRIVTI ensures that they become solvent members of society.

Course durations vary from 4 to 12 weeks, and are modestly priced. The sessions are held at convenient times in the morning and afternoon. Deserving students are offered scholarships and bus passes at concessional rates to defray expenses.

The current courses offered at MRIVTI span a diverse vocational set, that include the following:
• Information & Communication Technology
• Beauty Culture & Hair Dressing
• Garment Making
• Electrical
• Screen Printing

Graduates of MRIVTI, especially from those from Beauty Culture and Garment Making streams are very sought after.

The efficacy and relevance of courses is periodically assessed and suitable changes are made. Courses that do not draw students are retired and new courses take their place. By doing so, MRIVTI ensures that it keeps in tune with needs of society.

MRIVTI scours rural areas for appropriate students and motivates them to register for courses. It also encourages past and current students to get the friends enrolled. Getting students is a serious challenge. Well-wishers are requested to route suitable candidate so that they can be transformed into skilled professionals.

Successful students are awarded certificates by the Government of India.
Many graduates of MRIVTI have charted their success through the entrepreneurial route.

MRIVTI has links to industry and attempts to place graduates in respected organizations.
